YouTuber Makes Fun of Natural Hair Videos

Akilah, also known as Smoothiefreak on YouTube, has created a funny a video that makes fun of the way natural hair videos are made.

In the video she address common motifs such as:

  • 30 seconds of self-indulgent hair angles
  • unnecessary apologies of how you haven’t made videos in a while
  • long pauses that could have been cut
  • Talking to people off camera who the audience cannot see
  • Tricking people into buying products that they just started using
  • Doing length checks when your hair hasn’t grown.

I know this video is going piss of a few natural hair YouTubers, but I find it hilarious and, for the most part, pretty accurate.

Take a peek below.

p.s. This is the woman who also created the “Meet Your First Black Girlfriend” video.

Top Knot Bun with Marley Hair

posted on: May 9, 2013

I’m doing a photo challenge over on Instagram and one of the prompts called for my go-to style. When all else fails, I go for the top knot bun.

It’s simple, easy and perfect for any occasion.

I know the internet is saturated with marley hair buns, but I wanted to share a method with you all that find the easiest.

I hope you find it helpful.

Turn Up Ms. Monae!

Janelle Monae has officially let the world that she ain’t playin’ no more games with the release of her new song “Q.U.E.E.N” ft. Erykah Badu aka “Badula Oblongata.”

In this video below, Ms. Monae is giving you updo realness with a side of retro mod girl and you will deal.

In addition to this flyness, Janelle is also dancing for each and every one of the gods. Please take a moment to reflect on that updo in the second image. It’s crucial.

Key Lyrics include:

“They keep us underground working hard for the greedy,
But when it’s time pay they turn around and call us needy.”

“You can take my wings but I’m still goin’ fly
And even when you edit me the booty don’t lie.”

“Hey sister am I good enough for your heaven?
Say will your God accept me in my black and white?
Will he approve the way I’m made?
Or should I reprogram the programming and get down?”

Translation: “I will wear my black and white tuxedo because I’m a grown woman. You don’t pay my bills so you can’t tell me what to do.”

However, the most important lyrics of the song are.

I couldn’t agree with you more Ms. Monae. You make me proud to spell my name w.o.m.a.n.

You have one of the best swags in the game and as I like to say, “If it makes you feel good, wear it.”

Of course my girl Badu is her usual self.

Enjoy the video and receive life.

Watch Me Style | Braided Updo

posted on: April 28, 2013

I have a new found respect for hairstylists.

By no means did I think their jobs we’re easy, but until I felt the sting in my lower back and ankles from being on my feet for hours braiding hair, I couldn’t even begin to say I understood. I still can’t.

My girl from college let me play in her hair this past weekend. I don’t do hair. I’ve never put my hands in someone’s hair or even fixed my mouth to say I would try. Not until this weekend when I was asked, “Can you do something with my hair please?”

I used Ecostyler Gel to smooth down her edges and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to twist her hair.

The video may be 4 minutes and 13 seconds long, but trust me when I say this took me a long time to do. You can practically see the sleep dropping off of her face in the video below.

I learned that I can actually braid and I’m proud of myself.
