Teyonah Parris at “Breaking Bad” Premiere

posted on: July 25, 2013

Once again the natural hair gods have allowed Teyonah Parris and Felicia Leatherwood to come together to present this fabulous updo. The last time these ladies teamed up for a red carpet event, we were blessed with this hairstyle that took the natural hair blogosphere by storm.

Parris wore this style to the AMC premiere of ‘Breaking Bad’ last evening at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.

Both Parris and Leatherwood uploaded this picture to their instagram accounts. How cute! I love them together.

How to Wear Natural Hair Underneath Graduation Cap

posted on: May 20, 2013

When I tried to fit my hair underneath my graduation cap the first time, it was a total fail. I don’t think my head itself could fit underneath the cap. Okay I’m exaggerating a bit, but things were pretty tight.

I asked the bookstore for an extra-large, but I still couldn’t figure out a style that I wanted to wear that would fit my personality.

However, I was playing around in the mirror one day with the cap on my head and I just started rolling my hair to the side. Hence, this style.

By sweeping my hair to the side, technically I avoided trying to fit my hair underneath the cap. I blew my hair out on graduation day, but I didn’t blow it out in the tutorial.

This style has a retro vibe. It’s super easy, and makes you look “put together” without having to try very hard.

Teyonah Parris Updo on Natural Hair

posted on: March 25, 2013

On January 28, 2013, I was introduced to Teyonnah Parris’s hair. She was at the 2013 SAG awards and I was stunned by how gorgeous her hair was.

I had to write a blog post about her hair before I went to class. Even though I was supposed to be doing some studying of some sort.

I wasn’t stunned because she was wearing her natural hair on the red carpet. I was amazed that her hair was styled.

You may be thinking, “Duh Brittany of course her hair was styled. She was on the red carpet.”

But let’s be honest, how often do you see someone with a fierce natural hair updo on the red carpet. I love afros, twas and the likes, but I’m a woman that loves styled hair.

I have a bias for “fixed hair” and I’m not ashamed of that.

Felicia Leatherwood was the mastermind behind Parris’s coifs at the SAG Awards and since I did not have the opportunity to recreate that style like I wanted, I decided I would try and recreate the style she wore to AMC’s “Mad Men” series premiere. She has a role on the show.

Parris’s hair was done by celebrity hairstylist Darico Jackson.

I know the way I styled my hair is no comparison to hers, but I think I deserve an A for effort. Whatcha say?

Why don’t you press play and see for yourself.

From Sue:

You can also try tying the hair up with a banana clip (available at Walmart). However, section off a portion at the front which will act as the pompadour. Once the banana clip is in place, you can pin the hair down to cover the clip. You can then pin the portion at the front as well. This style works even without adding extensions, though the “pomp” at the front is smaller.
